Atelier Barnard

About Ian Barnard

The hand behind every piece in the atelier.

Master diamond setter, jeweller, and the founder of Atelier Barnard. Twenty years setting for international fine jewellery houses, and the quiet teacher behind a generation of working setters worldwide.

A jeweller, raised at the bench.

Ian trained in the British jewellery trade, on the bench, in the old-fashioned way: years of repetition, a master setter watching over the work, and the slow accumulation of standard.

The skill he was taught, and the skill he now teaches, is micro setting: the precise placement and securing of small diamonds by hand under a microscope.

The work that came before the atelier.

For most of his career, Ian set stones for other people's names: the trade work that sits behind the windows of houses that do not advertise the hands that built their pieces.

Alongside the setting work, Ian runs Setting The Standard, private masterclasses for working jewellers from across the world. The standard the students are trained to is the same standard your commission is held to.

Why Mallorca.

Atelier Barnard was opened in Palma de Mallorca because the island is quietly home to a serious clientele, and because craft and patience still belong here.

The atelier is on Carrer de Sant Miquel, in the historic centre of Palma. Visits are by appointment, and clients are received personally.

Have a piece in mind?

The atelier takes a small number of private commissions at a time. The earliest conversations are usually the easiest — a short call or a meeting at the workshop is enough to know whether what you have in mind is something we should build together.
